We accept that repairing our present requires an honest look at the wounds of our past.  We also believe that, through working together as a multicultural community organization, we can examine the past, “heal hard history,” and build a more united future, pursuing the ideal of “beloved community.”

Our mission: To remember, acknowledge, and reflect upon our history of racial terror by partnering with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) to recognize victims of lynching in Volusia County, Florida.

 Our goals emphasize three points:

  1. Honor (remember lynching victims and celebrate civil rights victories)

  2. Educate (explore our divided past and chart a united future)

  3. Reconcile (cultivate healing and reconciliation)

Your gift to the VRC will help facilitate racial healing and restoration, as well as directly support three distinct projects, each with guidelines set forth by the Equal Justice Initiative:

Soil Collection Project - we will conduct historical research to identify the location for each of the five documented lynchings and collect soil at each site. Funds will support the cost of individual soil collection ceremonies honoring each of the five documented victims, a permanent exhibit (location TBD) to house the jars of soil, and a public unveiling ceremony of the permanent exhibit.

Historical Marker Project – we will place historical markers at several appropriate locations to memorialize the Volusia County victims of racial terror lynching. Funds will support public unveiling ceremonies for the markers.

Monument Placement Project-- we will claim Volusia County’s monument from the NATIONAL MEMORIAL FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE in Montgomery and place it in a significant location in Volusia County. Funds raised will be used for this important project including the design and construction of the site which will display the EJI-constructed monument.

Funding will also be used for continued community education, programming and operational expenses of the VRC.
